Small tattoo in Valencia: price and where

It is the most requested tattoo and the worst explained. Small does not mean cheap, or easy, or quick to decide on.

What it really costs

This is where expectation collides with the trade: every serious studio has a minimum below which it will not work, between €50 and €80 in Valencia. That minimum is not the price of the ink: it is the sterile single-use material, prepping the area, design time and the regulated disposal of the waste. Opening a fresh set costs the same for a three-centimetre phrase as for a twenty-centimetre piece.

• 3–6 cm (symbol, date, word, small flower): €50–150.
• 7–12 cm (forearm, ankle, shoulder blade): €120–350.
• Micro tattoo (under 3 cm): still the studio minimum, and sometimes more: precision at that scale is slow work.

What holds up small and what does not

A tattoo does not stay as it looked on day one: ink spreads slightly under the skin over the years. On a large piece you do not notice. On a three-centimetre one, you do.

• Works: fine line with a clean stroke, symbols with space between the lines, simple lettering, small blackwork, dotwork.
• Borderline: microrealism. It is spectacular and there are very good specialists, but it calls for a specific artist and good upkeep.
• Bad idea small: tight detail, fine gradients, long text in small type and anything with lines nearly touching. In five years it blurs.

Where to put it

• Age well: inner forearm, triceps, shoulder blade, calf. Stable skin and little friction.
• So-so: wrist and ankle — very visible, but they rub against watches and socks.
• Age badly: fingers, hands, feet and the sides of the foot. The skin renews fast and rubs constantly; there touch-ups are a matter of months, not years. No serious studio will guarantee it.

Can I get it done today?

That is the other usual question, and here price stops calling the shots. Most studios in Valencia work by appointment and their most in-demand artists are booked weeks ahead, so for a walk-in the list gets short.

Before you go

• Take the design printed at actual size and tape it onto the spot. It reads far better that way than on screen.
• Eat beforehand. Even if it is small and takes fifteen minutes.
• Ask whether the first touch-up is included and within what period.
• Ask for the aftercare protocol in writing: in the Valencian Community it is a legal obligation, not an extra.
