Cover-up in Valencia: covering a tattoo

Covering a tattoo is not tattooing over one. It is the most technical work there is, and the one that goes worst when it is rushed or done in the wrong place.

First things first: not everything can be covered directly

New ink does not erase the old ink, it adds to it. That is why a cover-up only works if the new design is bigger, darker and denser than what is underneath. A fine grey line covers well. A saturated, large black tribal from the nineties almost never covers without being lightened first.

When you need laser first

This is the part that changes the result. It is not about removing the old tattoo, but about bringing its intensity down so the new one has room. Two or three laser sessions take enough density out of the original for the artist to design freely instead of working around a problem.

You need lightening first if the old tattoo is saturated black, if it has heavy outlines, if it is already large, or if what you want on top has colour or light areas.

• Laser sessions for fading: 2–4, not the 8–12 needed to remove it completely.
• Wait between sessions: 6–8 weeks. The body needs that time to clear the fragmented pigment.
• Wait before tattooing over it: 8 weeks from the last laser session, minimum.

In other words: a cover-up with lightening first is four to eight months of process. Anyone selling it to you for next week is not telling you everything.

Which designs work on top

• Blackwork and ornamental: solid black, the safest solution.
• Japanese / irezumi: the king of cover-up styles. Waves, flowers and scales absorb awkward shapes without the patch showing.
• Black and grey realism: works if there is room to go bigger, because shading hides a lot.
• Dense floral and mandalas: good when the old mark is irregular.

What almost never works on top: fine line, microrealism and anything with white or clean skin areas. If someone promises you that, be sceptical.

A cover-up is charged by time, like any tattoo, but it involves more: more design, more sessions and more pigment.

• Small cover-up (up to 10 cm, no laser): €150–400.
• Medium (forearm, ankle): €350–800, usually across two sessions.
• Large (back, chest, sleeve): from €1,000 upwards.
• Laser session for lightening: €60–150 depending on size, and you will need several.

Before you decide

• Ask to see the artist's healed cover-ups, not fresh photos. A cover-up looks good the day it is finished; the one that matters is the one a year later.
• Take the old tattoo to the consultation, in person and in daylight. It cannot be assessed from a photo.
• Ask outright whether laser is needed. A professional will tell you even if it costs them work today.
• Be wary of anyone who promises to cover anything without seeing it.
